A Gentle Introduction to Linux for Non-Geeks: What Does Linux Look Like?
Have you ever felt like raising your laptop in the air, smashing it on the floor really hard and jumping on it a thousand times? Have you ever had the urge to use a hammer and beat your computer into a million pieces? Let me guess: you’re using Windows from Microsoft, right? I know because I’ve felt that way so often ever since Windows 95 all the way to Windows XP. What a lot of people don’t know is that, in most cases, their anger should really not be directed at their innocent laptops, but at Windows, which is the operating system that controls your laptop and makes it do things. What is an operating system? Windows is a very well known one – when you buy a new PC, it’s there already, which might lead a lot of people thinking PC and Windows are synonyms. When you buy a Mac from Apple, you’ll notice the interface you see on the screen is very different from Windows XP, that’s because Mac uses an operating system called Mac OS X.
There are many other different operating systems. Every month on the fourth Friday we’ll take a look at Linux, a completely free operating system that anyone can download and install on their PCs or Macs. If you’ve had enough of Windows and are dreading the dreadful Vista, I hope this little series will help you gather enough information and muster up the courage to give Linux a try. I promise to keep everything simple and in small chunks that even your mom will understand. So you’ve never seen Linux before? Here’s one example of how Linux can look like I found on You Tube: enjoy and see you next month!
