Click your way to a Linux Installation without any Partitioning

It’s the 4th Friday of the month and you know it’s time for your favorite A Gentle Introduction to Linux for Non-Geeks again! This week we’ll learn how to put Linux on your PC by downloading a file and simply clicking on it just like installing a Windows application. You should have a broadband connection, and make sure you have at least 256MB of RAM and a 1GHz or faster Intel/AMD processer. To check if you meet the above system requirements, go to Control Panel and click on System. You should have at least 5 GB of free space on your hard disc too. To find out how much free space you have, go to My Computer, under Hard Disk Drives, right click on the hard disk you’d like to install the program and check Properties.

All you have to do is:

1.Go to http://wubi-installer.org/ and download the program. Stay connected to the Internet
2.Click on the program, and you’ll see the following.
wubi installation
You can leave everything as it and just enter a user name and password for your Ubuntu Linux system (make sure you memorize them and write them down somewhere safe). If you have an older PC, consider changing the Desktop Environment to Xubuntu. You’ll still have Ubuntu Linux, only with a different „theme“.
3.Click Install and let the installation process begin. This might take sometime as more files need to be downloaded.
4.When the installation is completed, you’ll be asked to reboot your PC.
5.Instead of booting directly into your Windows system, you will now see a menu that lets you choose between Windows or Ubuntu. Use your arrow key to select Ubuntu and hit Enter.
wubi menu ubuntu or windows
6.The installation continues and you can see the process on the screen. It will take another 10 to 15 minutes before the machine reboots itself.
7.And that’s it. From now on you’ll be presented an option to boot into Ubuntu.

Feel free to play around with your Linux system. You’ll notice that it’s a lot more reponsive than the Linux system you tried out last month using a Live CD. It’s perfectly normal if something doesn’t seem to work. Stick around and we’ll learn how to tweak your system to make things work.
