Free Open Source Software which Runs on Windows

It’s the 4th Friday of the month and you know it’s time for your favorite A Gentle Introduction to Linux for Non-Geeks again! If you’re wondering about the rather skimpy content of Cryptic Clarity of late, it’s because I’ve been traveling and there’s an important deadline coming up. Perfectly legitimate and acceptable excuses wouldn’t you say? I should be able to devote more time to this little project of mine once 2007 is behind us. Anyways back to our Linux.

We’ve talked about open source software a few weeks ago, and even if you’re not running Linux, there are still hundreds if not thousands pieces of free and open source software that you can use on your Windows system. Take the browser you’re using to access Cryptic Clarity: if you’re still using Microsoft’s flaw-ridden Internet Explorer, here’s a better alternative:Mozilla FireFox. You need some convincing before taking the plunge? We’ll tell you why next month. While you’re at it: check out Outlook Express alternative: Thunderbird as well as Microsoft Office alternative: Open Office.

For those of you who can’t wait to get your hands on more free open source software, Open Source Windows has a pretty good list of some great programs, from peer-to-peer file sharing programs to video players, from graphics editing programs to chat clients. Do have a look and feel free to download and use them!
