A university where students learn to meditate? Consciousness based education and world peace? It actually all sounds quite beautiful if it doesn’t so alarmingly resonate with the Scientological agenda of world domination. In any case the famed director David Lynch has been touring Europe these couple of weeks to promote and found universities to teach the philosophy of Transcendental Meditation. Since I know nothing about Maharishi Mahesh Yogi or his Transcendental Meditation methods which Lynch has been practicing for decades, I’m willing to give his vision of world peace the benefit of the doubt. It’s world peace after all! However, his appearance this week with his partner Emanuel Schiffgens (link to AGPF, in German), who styled himself in a white robe and a golden crown, at a culture center in Berlin to promote his pedagogical ideality after having bought a piece of land in town where the University of Invincible Germany is to be built, seriously undermined Lynch’s seemingly benevolent intention. keep reading… »

From Hitler to Pinochet and beyond, history shows there are certain steps that any would-be dictator must take to destroy constitutional freedoms, wrote author Naomi Wolf back in April for the Guardian. Her new book, The End of America: Letter of Warning To A Young Patriot details each and every of these steps, all of which the Bush administration has already initiated and are being developed in the US. For a year and a half now, every time Wolf gets on a plane she would have a high security risk symbol stamped on her boarding pass. She’s “on the list” for criticizing the Bush administration.

After reading the article on Los Angeles Times I wrote William Lobdell, author of the piece, to thank him for his heart felt honesty. In an age of religious monomania, where feigning piety is easy and as a matter of course, where turning a blind eye to the glaring obvious is common and encouraged, where the ignorant is eager to believe and the powerful is eager to deceive, Lobdell does not give in to blind faith.
